I. Before a quake

Identify hazards and fix them:

Hot Water Heater, & Overhead Hazards.

  1. Secure hot water heater, bookcases, tall items

Create a disaster-preparedness plan.

  1. Save contact info: County fire and police, med., Neighborhood Watch, and a friend out of area.

  2. make sure everyone has the contact information

Create disaster kits (3-5 days) for home/car,

  1. A gallon of water per person per day

  2. First aid, medications, soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, etc

  3. Battery radio, flashlights and extra batteries

  4. Canned/packaged goods and cooking utensils, manual can opener

  5. Warm clothing, blankets, sturdy shoes

  6. Pet food, leashes

  7. Copies of insurance policies, personal IDs

  8. Comfort items for children

II. During a quake

Drop, take cover, and hold-on:

Drop. Move only a few steps to a nearby safe place.

Take cover.

Get under a sturdy desk or table. .

Stay indoors until the shaking stops. Stay away from windows and masonry fireplaces.

Expect the fire alarms and sprinklers to activate during a quake.

Hold On. (stay in place, be patient)

  1. When in bed, stay there

  2. Stay away from old chimneys.

III. After a quake

  1. Check for injuries and damage

  2. When safe, follow your disaster-preparedness plan.

  3. For gas leak smell or hiss? Safest option is: exit house & close outside house valve (vertical is on, horiz is off.) PG&E will turn gas back on, after repairs.
